The Eleos Foundation: For-Profit Investments in the Developing World

This week on Socially Conscious Investing, Andy Lower of The Eleos Foundation is interviewed on Wednesday, May 11. The Eleos Foundation is an organization dedicated to catalyzing capital in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty with compassion and effectiveness.

Following the sale of a retreat center in Santa Barbara, California, known as La Casa de Maria, The Eleos Foundation was established in January 2007 . The resources coming out of the sale were dedicated for use in developing health and education in the developing world with the monetary poor.

Mr. Lower explains that The Eleos Foundation has two primary strategies for addressing the issue of extreme poverty. First is to create, nurture and participate in a learning community that extends from local to global. Helping people understand the options and how they can personally participate in fighting extreme poverty while seeing a return on their investment is key to the work Eleos does.

In the developing world, Eleos focuses on health and education to find businesses (social enterprises) that are impacting change. Research is conducted in depth and in person to find the right organizations. Eleos then embarks on their second strategy, to develop investment opportunities and partners. Within this activity, Eleos engages strategies to reduce risk for investment partners.

Seeking to catalyze capital, Eleos works in partnership with communities, individuals, entrepreneurs, businesses, and organizations. The focus is on paradigm shifting and market-based solutions that deal with health and education. Motivated by compassion and striving for effectiveness, Eleos proactively aims to develop partnerships that will mobilize investors to improve the lives of millions of people in the developing world.
